Swami Bhoomananda Theertha's fight for reforms in temple rituals and religious practices began decades ago. The renowned Vedantin monk based in Kerala was one of the first to demand that women of all ages be allowed into the Sabarimala shrine, and is a litigant seeking court intervention in this. Bhoomananda's public interventions began with a protracted struggle to put an end to the popular ritual of singing obscene songs during the annual festival of Kodangullur Devi Temple, Kerala. In an interview with Praveen S Thampi, he argues that reason and logic find prime place in ancient Hindu scriptures, and that any ritual that fails the test of reason should be discarded.
